Chrystia Freeland, born in Peace River, Alberta in 1968, is a Canadian politician who has quickly risen to become one of the most influential figures in the country. But her journey to the highest levels of government was not a straightforward one. Freeland spent most of her early years in Ukraine, where her father worked for a Canadian grain company. She attended high school in Kiev and became fluent in Russian, a skill that would prove crucial in her future career. She then went on to study at Harvard University, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in Russian history and literature.
